By 1881 he had settled there permanently, painting hounds at kennels and on hunts across the New Forest. Breeds such as Foxhounds and the New Forest Buckhounds, like the pair in this 1877 painting by Emms, were frequently depicted.

This 2ft 5in x 2ft (75 x 62cm) oil on canvas, titled New Forest Buckhounds – Guider and Druid was offered for sale at Duke’s (25% buyer’s premium) of Dorchester on August 22. It was formerly in the collection of Hampshire County Council.

Doubtless its commercial appeal was stunted somewhat by the presence of a dead stag in the foreground of the composition. It sold on bottom estimate for £10,000.
