1. This 1930s portrait by Arthur Royce Bradbury (1892-1977) sold for eight times its upper guide at Taunton saleroom Greenslade Taylor Hunt on September 5. According to an inscription, the 12 x 8½in (30 x 22cm) oil on board was painted in Sark, where Bradbury also produced many marine watercolours.

2. A top estimate bid secured this late 19th century depiction of a wreck off the Suffolk coast by Benjamin Longley Lowsey (1833-1901) at local saleroom Bishop & Miller of Stowmarket on September 5. Lowsey was a mariner who lived much of his life in Southwold.

3. Energetic bidding emerged at Cockermouth saleroom Mitchells on September 4 for this 2ft x 20in (62 x 52cm) acrylic on board, titled Snow Gully, by mountaineer-painter Bill Peascod (1920-85). Peascod emigrated to Australia in 1952 and taught mining skills before returning to Cumbria in 1980.
