It carries the serial number 6/78 to the heel-plate.

The estimate is £1200-1600.

The September 5 sale at Beech Auctions in Callington, Cornwall, includes a trio medal group, logbook, diary and other ephemera from airman Flight Sergeant Wireless Operator Ernest McGuire (1924-44).

He was a crew member of Lancaster Bomber ND388 that left RAF Grimsby for an operation in Cologne on Christmas Eve 1944 but never returned. It was the aircrew’s 30th and final operation and the pilot’s 21st birthday.

A telegram included in the lot dated Boxing Day, 1944, informs McGuire’s parents that he is missing. The estimate is £600-900.
