The 2ft 4in x 16in (72 x 42cm) oil on canvas, depicting a carriage and a procession of riders on horseback and an elephant, with a large residence beyond, was catalogued by auction house Mallams (22.5% buyer’s premium) as 19th century and estimated at £600-800 in a sale of Indian and Islamic art on September 12.

“The picture was quite simply an early view of India depicting an interesting view of a procession,” said Mallams director Rupert Fogden.

The hammer fell to a bidder in the room who fought off competition from the internet.
