This work, Triumphant Reception, shows Napoleon arriving on horseback in a fortified courtyard, greeted by a military band and soldiers.

The 19in x 2ft 5in (48 x 73 cm) oil on canvas was offered at The Cotswold Auction Company (22% buyer’s premium) on October 22 at the Bankside Saleroom in Cirencester. Against a modest estimate in the mid-hundreds, it realised £1750 to a buyer on thesaleroom.com.

A handsome half-length portrait of a Georgian gentleman in striking red jacket consigned from the same estate also sparked strong competition, selling for £1350 against a £500-800 guide.
