1. This 21 x 18in (55 x 45cm) oil depicting Pierrot and Harlequin playing cup-and-ball is by Francesc Sans i Cabot (1834-81), a Catalan painter of mainly historical subjects who served as director of the Prado in Madrid from 1873-81. The picture, with its original frame, was knocked down on the lower estimate at Maidenhead auction house Dawson’s on October 26.
2. This 15 x 11½in (39 x 29cm) watercolour by Graham Sutherland (1903-80) is likely to have been a preparatory study for the artist’s 1939 painting Gorse on a Sea Wall, now in the Ulster Museum. It found a buyer in a timed auction of Modern and Contemporary art at Shropshire saleroom Halls on October 27.
3. An Art & Music auction at Mallams in Oxford featured 10 etchings by Italian artist Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-78), known for his architectural views of Rome and imaginary prisons he called Le Carceri d’Invenzione. This 19in x 2ft 3in (48 x 70cm) etching of The Pantheon outperformed its estimate of £50-100 on October 23.
