Patrick, who was born in Willington near Shipston-on- Stour on July 15, 1932, was the only child of Percy John Beauchamp Payne and Marian Payne (nee Bryan) and a cousin of the late Sarah Nichola Hobhouse Payne, later Viscountess Sandon. He was orphaned in 1941 after the sudden death of both his parents.
After an early career as a journalist Patrick specialised in early English watercolours from 1960 to 2015.
He opened the Arden Gallery in 1965 and ventured to the USA in 1980, establishing the English Antiques Centre, Pine Interiors and Phoenix Fine Art in Scottsdale, Arizona. Patrick’s late son Christopher John Beauchamp Payne, who died in November 2018, joined him in Scottsdale in 1983. After returning to the UK Patrick opened The Museum of Movie Memorabilia in Warwick and continued to deal in watercolours until 2015.
Passionate
He was passionate about Puccini and classical antiquities and was a former member of the Royal Archaeological Institute. His daughter Vanessa, who is a dealer herself in ancient art, said “he was surrounded by all these lovely things when he died”.
He was very well known and loved on the UK antiques fair circuit and before retiring exhibited regularly at the NEC, Tatton Park and Chester Racecourse.
He is survived by one daughter, nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Patrick will be reunited with his parents at the Church of St Martin, Barcheston, near Shipston-on-Stour on Thursday, May 16, at 1pm. Donations to The British Heart Foundation welcome.
