Dealers in equestrian feed, medicine and tack displayed large pottery horses like these in their windows as a way of attracting customers. Their appeal lingers on today.

This American collection had been put together over several decades with an eye for its equestrian and sculptural appeal and had been purchased from well-known dealers such as Jonathan Horne and Paul Vandekar.

Good condition and/or unusual decoration were what the bidders wanted here, driving prices well over estimate. Pictured here are the three of the more expensive.

The sale took place on April 9.
