1. This 3½ x 5½in (9 x 14cm) mixed media and collage on card by John Maxwell (1905-62) titled Cyk (Cyclist) more than doubled its top guide to sell at Edinburgh auction house Lyon & Turnbull on March 13. The Scottish painter is known for his imaginative subjects: Night Flowers (1959) on the theme of moths, butterflies and flowers resides in the Tate.
2. Better known as a sculptor of stylised animals, German artist Ewald Matare (1887-1965) painted this 5½ x 7½in (14 x 19cm) abstract landscape watercolour in 1926 – a decade before he was denounced as ‘degenerate’ by the Nazis and one of his cat sculptures Die Katze was exhibited at Entartete Kunst (Degenerate Art) in Munich. The watercolour tipped over top estimate to sell at Scarborough saleroom David Duggleby on March 15.
3. Created on one of Albert Moulton Foweraker’s (1873-1942) many painting trips to Europe, this well-preserved 14 x 19½in (35 x 50cm) watercolour of a valley near Cordes, Tarn, in southern France was knocked down over top estimate at Thomson Roddick in Dumfries.
