Leading the way at the January 30-31 sale was a seaweed marquetry longcase.

Signed to the 12in (30cm) square brass dial William Pain, London, a maker recorded in the 1729 list of members of the Clockmakers’ Company of London, the clock had a five-knopped and finned pillar month-going movement.

In a 7ft 2in (2.19m) tall case, it was offered with two brass cased weights, pendulum and key and, against a £800-1200 estimate, sold at £3400 to one of the many private bidders who dominated the buying.
