While there, Chinni leant towards sculpture, hosting his first exhibition in New York in 1959 and in the 1960s, developing an approach to 3D abstraction.

His work was in the Rockefeller collection and is in various museums, including the Whitney Museum of American Art.

Consigned from a private collection to Hindman’s Modern Design sale in Chicago on May 9, Untitled Sculpture is a 1962 bronze on a travertine base. It stands at 4ft (1.23m) high and is signed CHINNI ‘62.

Estimated at $1500-2500, the piece sold for $4800 (£3780) or $6048 (£4764) inc 26% premium at Hindman.
