Based in Dukinfield, the Lancashire firm was a major player in the early years of motoring and was advertising its Perfection Motor Spirit from 1909. The firm became part of Esso and lost its identity in 1935.

The 2ft 6in (71cm) sign offered at the June 14 sale in Chippenham, Wiltshire, was previously believed to have hung at a Buxton garage, probably dates from the 1920s.

It sold for £5900, just shy of top estimate, to a motoring memorabilia collector who specialises in lightboxes.
