The contents of a cottage described as a place “where time has stood still” will be offered in a single-owner sale at Mellors & Kirk on February 6-7 in Nottingham.

Manthorpe House in Grantham was owned by Harold Ward, who filled it over many years with thousands of antiques and other bygones largely dating from the 18th and 19th centuries.

This 16 x 13in (41 x 33cm) oval oil portrait above was painted by the Chinese artist Spoilum (l.1785-1805) and depicts Captain George Delanoe, a 1st lieutenant and commander of HMS Repulse. According to a small inscription above the sitter’s left elbow, Delanoe lost his leg after a 32lb shot was fired from another vessel at the Nore mutiny, which took place at the Royal Navy anchorage in the Thames Estuary in May 1797. Estimate £1500-2000.
