Titled The Coffee Service and executed in pastel on 14 x 10in (35 x 25cm) paper, it shows a young Arab woman carrying a tray. It came from a private client based in Hampstead and was estimated at £1000-1500.

Offered on November 23 within an Arabic pattern vector gilded frame, it was knocked down at £14,500 to a UK dealer who specialises in Orientalist paintings.

Haag first travelled the Orient in the late 1850s. On returning to London he decorated his Hampstead studio in the Moorish style with carpets, jugs, weapons and furniture collected on his travels. He is chiefly known for his life-like portraits and colourful Oriental scenes that can make over £100,000 on the secondary market.
