A gold armorial ring discovered by a metal-detectorist on the shores of Loch Lomond in Scotland last year will be offered in the Dix Noonan Webb auction on September 10.

The finder declared the ring as Scottish Treasure Trove to the National Museum of Scotland but was told this June that the museum did not want to purchase it. She consigned it to the Mayfair auction house.

DNW’s further research revealed that the crest belonged to the Colman family of Brent Eleigh, Suffolk. The family used the coat of arms depicted on the bezel of the ring from 1598. This ring itself is thought to date from 1640-80

Estimate £8000-12,000.

Actor Andrew Burt (b.1945-2018) became a household name back in the early 1970s playing the role of Jack Sugden in Emmerdale Farm, after which he appeared in numerous television series.

He also assembled a Modern art collection – an interest only his closest friends were aware of. This particularly involved the works of Michael Ayrton (1921-75) and John Milne (1932-78).

Sugden’s large collection of art, paintings and bronze sculptures has been consigned for sale at the Swan auction in Tetsworth, Oxfordshire, on September 3.

One of the potential highlights is a bronze by Ayrton, from an edition of six, titled Daedalus Wingmaker, 1960, 18 x 22 x 15in (46 x 56 x 38cm) overall. It is estimated at £10,000-15,000.
