A Militaria, Coins and Medals sale on May 16 at Lawrences of Crewkerne in Somerset will include this silver Suffragette medal awarded by the Women’s Social and Political Union to women who were imprisoned and endured a hunger strike.
It was presented to Anna Lewis in February 1914 and comes with two silver portcullis brooches awarded to prisoners who were held at Holloway prison. Lewis told the press she was force-fed in prison, which damaged her throat and gave her a hoarse voice for the rest of her life. She is listed in the Suffragette Roll of Honour.
The group is estimated at £4000-6000.
A model of SS Mexico, one of the ships caught up in the infamous ‘Dresden Affair’ that marked the end of mass Irish emigration to Argentina, will be offered in a sale of Maritime, Scientific Models, Instruments & Art at Charles Miller on April 30.
The SS Mexico, recently re-named Duchessa di Genova under new ownership, arrived in Buenos Aires with over 1000 Italian migrants. Her arrival on February 15, 1889, coincided with the arrival of the SS Dresden carrying a further 1772 mostly Irish migrants who had been encouraged with assisted travel to emigrate to South America.
The overwhelmed local authorities were forced to deny disembarkation. It led to serious health problems among passengers. This 9ft 10in (3m) model in laminated pine, built by Napier & Sons, Glasgow in 1884, is being offered alongside a letter from Scottish shipbuilder William Beardmore to JM Bowker confirming the sale of the model for £50.

On May 15, Newbury saleroom Dreweatts will offer a single-owner sale of items from Plaish Hall, a Grade I-listed Tudor house in Church Stretton, Shropshire.
The auction, conducted for the family of the late Roy Merley, includes this oil on canvas, HMS Queen Charlotte at Spithead, by the Scottish artist Adam Callander (1750-1817).
Queen Charlotte was the first vessel to bear the name and was launched at Chatham dockyard in 1790. She carried 100 guns and was the flagship of Admiral Lord Howe at the Battle of the Glorious First of June.
Estimate £12,000-18,000.
