Lawrences’ forthcoming Spring Fine Art auction in Crewkerne comprises more than 2200 lots across three days of sales, with estimates ranging from £100 to over £25,000.
The 275-lot picture section on April 12, will include a 19th century view of the Bay of Palermo by the Sicilian landscapist Francesco Lojacono (1838-1915).
The signed 19in x 2ft 6in (48.5 x 75.5cm) oil on canvas has passed by descent from Hugo Schwab, an Austrian art collector who established himself in Britain after the Second World War as a businessman involved in the development of metal coat hangers.
This 19th century watercolour above depicts a scene from the First Carlist War (1833-40), an earlier Spanish civil war. It shows a spy from the Regent’s Christino army brought before Tomás de Zumalacárregui (1788-1835), a Spanish Basque officer who led the opposing Carlists and is considered one of Spain’s most notorious military figures (incidentally, he is also credited as the inventor of the Spanish omelette).
The 21 x 2ft 5in (53 x 74cm) work was painted by the English artist John Frederick Lewis (1805-76), who travelled to Spain and Morocco between 1832-34.
It forms part of the contents of Moigne Combe in Dorset, which is being sold on behalf of the executors of the late Major General Mark Bond on April 10 at Duke’s of Dorchester. The Bond family have been in Dorset since the mid-17th century and gave their name to Bond Street in London.
A sale on April 11 at South Cerney saleroom Dominic Winter will include a large selection of vintage camera and projection equipment, including more than 80 lots of vintage Leica cameras and accessories from a single owner’s lifetime collection.
Among them is a possibly unique original factory-produced black painted version of a Leica IIIg with two matching lenses and a black Leicavit rapid winder. The owner bought the camera at Christie’s London in July 1988 and subsequently took it to the Leica factory in Wetzlar in Germany to be authenticated.
The camera will be offered with a letter from Leica confirming its authenticity as a genuine factory-produced black version.
