That famous dictum ended a speech to cadets by Field Marshal Sir PW Chetwode Bart, 1st Baron Chetwode (1869-1950), at the inauguration of the Indian Military Academy Dehradun on December 10, 1932.

Chetwode was founder of the academy and a noted First World War cavalryman, his reputation sealed by his service in the Middle East from 1916, greatly aiding Allenby in his successful campaigns in Palestine – a theatre which still gave opportunities for the mounted arm to shine.

On April 10-11 in London, Spink is offering his field marshal’s baton estimated at £30,000-40,000 and his general officer’s 1831 pattern sword, scabbard and sword knot, contained in its brown leather case, as a separate lot guided at £600-800. They have been consigned by a direct descendant.
