The 2ft x 18in (60 x 46cm) oil on canvas depicts Charles-Etienne-Raymond Victor de Verninac, the artist’s nephew, who was just five years younger than Delacroix.
It has a provenance to the sitter, after which it was apparently sold along with other personal effects by the public administrator of New York – where de Verninac died in 1834, having contracted yellow fever on the return from a diplomatic voyage to South America. After that the painting entered collections in Connecticut and New York. It is offered with an estimate of $300,000-400,000.

The 2ft 2in x 2ft 8in (66 x 81cm) oil on canvas, signed lower right, has a provenance to a sale in Paris in 1969 and was included in the artist’s catalogue raisonné of 2008.
