The work, which was reputedly shown at the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle, sold for a mid-estimate $5000 (£3900) on August 23, plus 20% buyer’s premium. It had been purchased in Pennsylvania.

More than 320 pieces were offered from the collection of James Hellyer Jr of Wyndmoor, PA, the founder of an architectural and interior design firm in Philadelphia.

Among the American, English and French timepieces, an 1810 French allegorical seated figure bronze mantel clock sold for $5500 (£4300) against an estimate of $1500-2500, and a French Hercules fighting the Nemean Lion mantel clock guided at $1000-2000 took $5250 (£4100).
