The small painting on slate measuring 10½ x 9in (27 x 22.5cm) is inscribed on the reverse J Stella fecit. This is the only known example of a signed work on slate by the artist but the form of the signature is the same as on his engravings and certain drawings.
The work is dated to the early part of Stella’s career between his visit to Rome and his departure for Paris in 1634. It carries an estimate of €20,000-30,000.
