A fine folding screen (above) was offered at Hannam’s (23% buyer’s premium) at Selborne on September 5. Measuring 12 x 10½in (30 x 27cm) and decorated with various figures formed with ivory and mother of pearl, it was estimated at £3000-5000 and sold to a collector on the phone at £6500.

An ivory elephant with shibayama decoration signed by the noted Meiji craftsman Masayuki. Standing 13in (33cm) tall, it went over estimate in Sworders’ (23% buyer’s premium) sale at Stansted Mountfitchet on September 11, going to an English collector at £7600.

Appealing to the buoyant market in fans, a 15¾in (40cm) wide white metal and shibayama decorated example went at 10 times the top estimate at Ewbank’s (22.5% buyer’s premium) sale at Woking on September 12. Decorated with two fighting cocks in a garden landscape, it went to a UK buyer on the phone at £5400.
