A review of TEFAF Maastricht’s selection protocols has led to a major shake-up in next year’s exhibitor list.
Thirty-eight new exhibitors are included in the list of 276 dealers attending the March event (for the 2018 edition, there were 16 out of a field of around 270), representing nearly a fifth of the fair.
“As part of the continued drive by the organisation as a whole towards modernisation and change, this year TEFAF introduced a new selection protocol for TEFAF Maastricht, which has led to a number of new dealers being invited to join the fair,” said TEFAF chairman Nanne Dekking.
“Major re-calibration”
Change is concentrated in the Modern section – now headed by chairman Christophe van de Weghe – which has been subject to a “major re-calibration” and hosts 13 of the new exhibitors.
A spokesperson for the fair said the success of TEFAF New York Spring “has drawn modern and contemporary dealers’ attention to Maastricht and so applications to exhibit in this section were greatly increased this year”.
The newcomers include Germany’s Galerie Max Hetzler and Simon Lee from London.
For returning exhibitor Peter Osborne of London gallery Osborne Samuel, the drive to improve the Modern section is a positive development.
“If TEFAF stands for something, it’s for representing the full range of the best the art world has to offer. It should have a part of the strong world of contemporary to reflect the full market,” he said.
TEFAF New York exhibitor Pace Gallery, which showed at TEFAF Maastricht in 2006 and 2007 is also returning. Sophie Van Rappard, associate director, said: “We’re delighted to return to TEFAF in 2019. It is the right time, as the fair is expanding their contemporary section, but also logistically very worth it to further expand our reach towards Dutch, German and Italian collectors for example.”
Other arrivals are spread across the other sections including seven in Antiques, six in Paintings and three in Ancient Art.
