Until recently, the date of 1901 has been widely accepted. However, new evidence has emerged to suggest its origins date back to 1891 when it was located at Sealand, Flintshire.

This snuff box supports the earlier date. Made by the Birmingham silversmiths George Unite & Sons, it is hallmarked 1895 and engraved Chester Golf Club, May 21, 1896, ERC (apparently as a gift to a club member) – confirming that the Sealand club was considered Chester Golf Club.

An early description of that course when in the planning stage reads: “In due time, putting greens as true as billiard tables would easily be made without expense. Further there will be…nothing to try the temper like breaking clubs in trying to extricate the ball from whins, stones and deep bunkers.”

It is one of the oldest clubs of its kind in the county of Cheshire.

Running from October 11-14, the fair hosts 40 dealers with stock priced from £20-25,000. Other highlights include a Balenciaga dress once worn by Lady Lucan offered for £195 at the stand of Fashion Fandango as well as a pair of rare Harrach Aventurine glass vases pictured above, priced at £1350 at the stand of Love Deco.
