Seen at Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood (21% Buyer’s Premium), it includes among its suggestions and instructions 13 ‘correct and practical’ pattern plates that seem right for gaiters.

The title-page also makes special mention of ‘Regimentals, Ladies’ Riding Habits and Pelisses’. This work was bound with an 1831 edition of Jackson’s The Tailors’ Directory, illustrated with four plates.

Other highlights of the Exeter sale included an archive of photographs, advertising posters, broadsides, programmes and other material relating to the activities of the showman and circus proprietor ‘Lord’ George Sanger (1825-1911) which sold at £2400.
