The Machine Gun Corps was formed in October 1915 with infantry, cavalry, and motor branches, with a Heavy Branch a year later (which later became the Tank Corps).

The Guards Division formed its own support unit. A silver officer’s badge (pictured above) for this Guards Machine Gun Battalion, by Jennens & Co, Birmingham 1917, sold at the Dominic Winter (20% buyer’s premium) November 9 auction for £420 against an estimate of £100-150 via a commission bid by a collector.

It was part of a 93-lot £40,000 singleowner collection of regimental badges representing British, Canadian and other Commonwealth countries amassed over the last 40 years.
