A silver plaque to the base was inscribed Presented to Sir AW Snelling, British Ambassador to South Africa, on the occasion of the opening of the Kimberley Centenary Diamond Exhibit, July 1971. It trebled hopes to reach £1900.

An unusual entry to Hansons’ September auction in Teddington, south-west London, was a ‘diamond’ in the rough – an uncut 5ct crystal still in its original carrier stone.
