Sleeping dog
Much like his father before him, the Dutch painter Cornelis Saftleven (1607-81) chose to depict scenes from everyday life in his paintings and drawings. Between many drawings of peasant life, the artist also made numerous sheets showing animals, and dogs in particular.
This signed small, 4 x 5½in (10 x 14cm), chalk wash drawing of a sleeping canine (above) is estimated at £2000-3000 in Christie’s July 3 sale of Old Master and British works on paper in King Street.
Maróti's self-portrait
An acrylic self-portrait by Dénes Maróti, priced at £5000 by Fiumano Clase.
This summer, contemporary London gallery Fiumano Clase will showcase the art of Hungarian-born painter Dénes Maróti (b.1978) with an exhibition of paintings and etchings from June 8-July 8 at its gallery in King’s Cross.
The show, titled Landscape and the Self, will include this 3ft 3in x 2ft 3in (1m x 70cm) acrylic self-portrait, painted last year and priced at £5000.
Bronckhorst's insects

Hockney print
‘The Arrival of Spring in Woldgate, East Yorkshire’, a print by David Hockney estimated at £30,000-50,000 at Forum Auctions.
This 4ft 6in x 3ft 5in (1.37 x 1.04m) print was originally conceived on an iPad in 2011 by David Hockney (b.1937).
The Arrival of Spring in Woldgate, East Yorkshire was published by the artist and is signed, dated and numbered from an edition of 25 in pencil.
It carries a £30,000-50,000 guide in a sale of editions and works on paper at Forum Auctions in Mayfair on June 25.
Daniel Gardner portrait
Portrait of a lady by Daniel Gardner, priced at £38,000 by Guy Peppiatt.
A regular fixture of the summer calendar is London dealer Guy Peppiatt’s British drawings and watercolours show at his gallery in St James’s, held this year until June 18.
For sale is this three-quarter-length portrait of a lady by the innovative portrait painter Daniel Gardner (1750-1805).
Possibly depicting Anne Elizabeth Hall, the daughter of General Thomas Hall, the 2ft 1in x 21in (64 x 53cm) mixed-media work is an example of Gardner’s experimentation with gouache and pastel, which was used to give his portraits a rough appearance. It is priced at £38,000.
Fragonard work on paper

Painted in the manner of an antique relief, this early neoclassical work by Alexandre-Évariste Fragonard (1780-1850) is priced at under £50,000 from Old Master drawing dealership Stephen Ongpin Fine Art, in Duke Street, St James’s.
The 8 x 19in (20 x 48cm) pen and ink wash depicts a centurion begging for protection from Marc Antony during a revolt.
Howard Hodgkin print
Artist’s proof print by Howard Hodgkin from an edition of 30, estimated at £5000-7000 at Sotheby’s.
A dedicated sale of works on paper by British artist Howard Hodgkin (1932-2017), dating from 1966 until his death last year, will be offered as part of Sotheby’s ‘Modern British Week’ in New Bond Street on June 12.
This 2ft 5in x 3ft (74 x 91cm) artist’s proof print, executed in 2014 in an edition of 30, is estimated at £5000-7000.
Proceeds from the sale will fund a complete collection of Hodgkin’s graphic work to be given to a museum, as well as supporting a new edition of the artist’s catalogue raisonné.

Pourbus the Younger portrait
Portrait of an unknown Spanish noblewoman by Frans Pourbus the Younger and his studio, priced at £165,000 by The Weiss Gallery.
The Weiss Gallery, specialist in Tudor, Stuart and north European Old Master portraiture, is selling this portrait of an unknown Spanish noblewoman by Frans Pourbus the Younger (1569-1622) and his studio.
The 3ft 9in x 2ft 9in (1.15m x 82cm) oil portrait, datable by costume and hairstyle to c.1603, is likely to have been painted while Pourbus was on a diplomatic mission in Innsbruck or Graz, home to the Leopoldine line of the Hapsburgs. The carnation in the sitter’s hair suggests the portrait may have been commissioned to celebrate an engagement.
It is priced at £165,000.
Stoic Thinker
‘Stoic Thinker’ by Juan Do, better known as the ‘Master of the Annunciation to the Shepherds’ priced at €350,000 by Mayfair dealership Colnaghi.
Stoic Thinker is the title of this Old Master by the obscure Neapolitan painter Juan Do (1604-54), better known as the ‘Master of the Annunciation to the Shepherds’.
The 2ft 6in x 23in (76 x 58cm) oil portrait, believed to date c.1630s-40, is among the many idealised depictions of philosophers and poets of classical antiquity that were popular in Neapolitan culture during the mid-17th century.
It is priced at €350,000 from Mayfair dealership Colnaghi.
Stubbs' harvest scene

Bonhams’ Old Master paintings sale in New Bond Street on July 4 will include this 2ft 3in x 3ft 2in (67 x 97cm) oil on millboard by England’s famous animal painter, George Stubbs (1724-1806).
The harvest scene, dated 1785, depicts girls gleaning and men loading sheaves of corn onto a cart pulled by shire horses. It carries an estimate of £350,000-450,000.
OVER £500,000
‘Meeting in the Park’ by Konstantin Somov, estimated at £500,000-700,000 at MacDougall’s.
Titled Meeting in the Park, this signed 16 x 12in (40.5 x 31cm) oil on canvas is one of Konstantin Somov’s (1869–1939) so-called ‘gallant scenes’, which he produced in the early post-revolutionary years in Russia.
Dated 1919, it has been consigned from a private European collection and stars in a sale of Russian art and antiques on June 6 at MacDougall’s in The Mall, central London. It carries a guide of £500,000-700,000.
