Two names in particular stood out at the March 16 sale at Evesham: Mark Marshall and George White.
At his best Marshall, who worked alongside Robert Wallace Martin for a while, can match the Martin brothers for imagination.
An 8in (20cm) vase produced for Doulton Lambeth in c.1880 and signed MVM, was much admired and went comfortably over a strong estimate, selling at £5400.
A 15in (38cm) Royal Doulton vase, painted with a classical scene of maidens being serenaded by George White, was inscribed to the base To Edward J Raby Esq. In token of Esteem and Regard 1912.
It was a gift from White when he retired from the factory and possibly his last piece for Royal Doulton. It sold to an American collector on the lower estimate at £3500.
