The picture comes from a large scrapbook, with photographs and illustrations including angling images, which was kept by a Marjorie Taylor, nee Tillard, from 1895-1913.

The scrapbook’s contents are being serialised in Fallon’s Angler, “a medley of pescatorial prose” by John Andrews, an angling dealer, writer and organiser of the National Vintage Fishing Tackle Fair.

He said: “The Taylor family took a house in Sutherland in June 1905 where the salmon run on the Helmsdale would have been immense and, as the photograph shows, fishing was a challenge. This album is a fascinating document and is an example of the kind of angling ephemera which I will be selling at the fair.”

Fully booked, the annual National Vintage Fishing Tackle Fair runs at the Abbey Stadium in the Worcestershire town of Redditch on Sunday, May 13.

It offers tackle galore, plus books and prints reel in collectors, with an added attraction in the person of Neil Freeman of Angling Auctions on valuations.
