Away from the high four-figure prices often obtained for the rank-defined dress of courtiers and mandarins (ATGs passim), Chinese silk clothes have wide appeal at a less scholarly level.
An example was a ladies’ silk and embroidered summer jacket from c.1920 offered at Mitchells (20% buyer’s premium) in Cockermouth on March 21-23. Decorated with cranes above waves and peonies, it was in very good condition.
Pictured above, it sold to a Shanghai bidder who went to a triple-estimate £350.
