The well-known 3ft 4in x 2ft 6in (1.01m x 76cm) poster for the Sean Connery film was designed by the renowned London-based American graphic artist Robert Brownjohn (1925-70).

However, crucially, this is the rare ‘B-style’ made to escape the Irish censor active in the Swinging Sixties.

The main poster for the 1964 movie showed the bikini-clad, gold-painted figure of Margaret Nolan (who stood in for Bond girl Shirley Eaton for the poster). But in Ireland the bikini girl was replaced by a gold-painted hand.

Estimated at £1500-2000 at the Lichfield rooms on June 11, it attracted wide interest before selling on the phone at £6700.

“From a dusty old farmhouse down the road… bang! You never know what’s behind every door,” said auctioneer Richard Winterton.
