This gold Aston Villa medal was awarded to George Ramsay (1855-1935), secretary and manager of the club during the most successful period in its history.

Ramsay played in and captained the side, and was secretary/manager from 1884-1926. His achievements included six league championships and six FA Cups.

The 18ct gold medal made by Vaughan, Birmingham, was awarded to Ramsay in 1897, and has been consigned to Plymouth Auctions on June 27 with an estimate of £800-1000.


The first tranche of a large collection of African tribal masks, Tibetan and Chinese bronzes and other items assembled by an academic will be offered at Chalkwell Auctions in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, on June 14.

The late Dr James Bynon, who wrote his doctorate thesis on the linguistics of the Berbers in north Africa, started collecting aged five and went on to assemble his collection largely from antiques fairs in south-east England.

This 17in (43cm) high Tibetan gilt bronze figure of a Bodhisattva, probably 18th century or earlier, is estimated at £500-800.


A sale of antique and modern jewellery at Fellows in Birmingham on June 14 will feature a large selection of Georgian and memorial jewellery.

Among the memorial pieces are several period brooches, including this late Georgian gold diamond, split pearl and woven hair memorial watch key, estimated at £900-1400.

Unusually complete for a 1920s radio, this example will be offered in a Scientific & Musical Instruments sale at Tennants in Leyburn, North Yorkshire, on June 20.

The ‘Ethodyne’ seven valve super-heterodyne receiver was made by Burndept, a UK manufacturer of domestic electronics and one of the 12 founders of the BBC.

This particular example of the Ethodyne has two speaker horns (one for loud and one for quiet volumes), diamond frame aerials for different frequencies, the original storage cabinet, and comes complete with its instruction booklets and copies of the Radio Supplement from 1926.
