Yet, that is where Mark Lane, owner of North Shields saleroom Featonby’s (23.5% buyer’s premium inc VAT), discovered this signed 16 x 11½in (40 x 29cm) oil on board, pictured above, while undertaking a house clearance. The vendor had inherited the painting from an uncle who had owned it for decades.
Executed in Seago’s typically fluid style, the undated River Scene with Church in Background is thought to depict a view in Gloucestershire.
Given an appealingly low estimate of £800-1200 in a sale on May 14, it sparked a bidding war between two London galleries before it was knocked down at £18,200.
