Consigned from a longstanding collection in west Dorset, the 7 x 9in (17 x 23cm) work was pursued to £7000 on May 31, where it was knocked down to an internet buyer in the Pacific Rim.
Guy Schwinge, a partner at Duke’s, described the work as a “strong image” that had come from an old family collection.
The image of Akbar II processing on an elephant is found elsewhere, including a Company School version in the V&A’s collection.
