Two specialists are leaving fellow London saleroom Spink to join the Bolton Street, Mayfair, firm. Up to now banknotes have come under the umbrella of the DNW coins department, but a dedicated team will be put together.

The new department will be headed by Andrew Pattison, assisted by specialist Thomasina Smith. DNW banknotes consultant Michael O’Grady will continue in his role.

DNW managing director and chief executive officer Pierce Noonan said: “I am very much looking forward to welcoming Andrew and Thomasina to DNW on July 2 once they have fulfilled their contractual obligations at Spink. Both have a wealth of experience working at the very top end of the banknote market and I have no doubt they will fit in seamlessly with the team of exceptional specialists and support staff that we already have in place here.

“We have in recent years sold a steadily increasing number of banknotes, presided over by our expert consultant Mike O’Grady.

“However, it has never been a discipline in which we have majored and it is very exciting to now be setting up a stand-alone banknote department capable of competing at the very highest level.

“This venture comes at a good time for us, having just agreed a lease to take on all the office space in the adjoining building at 17 Bolton Street.”

DNW will not occupy all the building available next door, which is partly residential, but it can take on two floors including the ground floor.

The jewellery department could also use the extra space available.

Business as usual

Spink’s global heads of banknotes, Barnaby Faull and Kelvin Cheung, said: “Spink’s banknote department in London is happy to confirm the appointment of Elaine Fung as junior specialist. The team at Spink is already in the process of cataloguing our next auctions.

“It is very much business as usual and we are looking forward to some superb banknote offerings in the months to come.”
