So much so that even in the grim years around 2011 they were worth the attention of fraudsters who often employed the dodgy car dealers’ ‘cut and shunt’ technique of making one good-looking piece from two wrecks.
No such problems with a pair of the firm’s armchairs offered at Bristol Auction Rooms (20% buyer’s premium) on April 25.
With classic splay seats and roll arms, the 2ft 10in (88cm) wide chairs were stamped to the backlegs and brass casters Howard & Sons, London. Against a £2000-3000 estimate, they sold at £13,000 to a private buyer bidding against phone and online rivals.
