A 14-lot collection of 19th century British ‘tinsel’ pictures has been consigned to Roseberys London’s Craft & Tradition sale in West Norwood on July 19.

‘Tinsel’ pictures were at their height during the 19th century, typically featuring popular theatrical figures and embellished with silks, satins and metallic or copper foil from tea or cigar packages. The prints were bought for a penny and could be altered at home with the owner’s own decorations.

This 10 x 8in (25 x 21cm) theatrical tinsel picture above depicts the Master Owen as Young Norval in the play Douglas. It is one of two mid-19th century examples, applied with foil and silk decoration, guided in the same lot at £200-300.
