This late 18th century mahogany serpentine front sideboard shown above was owned by the influential British nurse, Ethel Gordon Fenwick (1857-1947).

After training as a nurse she became matron of St Bartholomew’s Hospital and went on to promote the training and qualification of nurses. She safeguarded the use of the term ‘nurse’ as a professional title, herself being registered as ‘Nurse Number 1’. Fenwick also founded the Royal British Nurses’ Association and the Florence Nightingale International Foundation.

The sideboard, measuring 5ft 7in x 3ft 1in (1.71m x 94cm), had resided in her home at 20 Upper Wimpole Street, London, and is estimated at £5000-7000 in Chorley’s January 30-31 sale in Gloucestershire.

On February 12, London Auctions will sell items from the estate of the late Lady Wanda Boothby, the wife of Conservative peer, Lord Robert Boothby (1900-86).

The 90-lot collection includes pictures and personal ephemera removed from her property in Belgravia, where she moved following Lord Boothby’s death in 1986.

Among the lots is a garden painting by Blanche Hoschedé-Monet (1865- 1947), both the stepdaughter and the daughter-in-law of Claude Monet.

Garden at Giverny, a 4ft 11in x 6ft 8in (59 x 80cm) oil on canvas, was purchased in 1965 and bears a label for New Bond Street gallery GM Lotinga.

Estimate £8000-12,000.

In a single-owner sale on February 7 in Salisbury, Woolley & Wallis will offer the Modern British art collection of the late antiques dealer, Geoffrey Harley (1937-2016).

Harley started his career dealing in antiques on the Portobello Road before moving to Wiltshire, where he dealt in large-scale antiques from a vast showroom near the village of Christian Malford.

Pictured here is a 22 x 16in (56 x 41cm) oil on board of two nudes by Keith Vaughan (1912-77). It is believed to be an early work probably painted before 1936, and last appeared at auction in 1988.

Estimate £20,000-30,000.
