‘Goliath’ carriage clock, engraved to the backplate John Moore & Sons Clerkenwell London, sold at Greenslade Taylor Hunt in Taunton for £6800.
Engraved to the backplate John Moore & Sons Clerkenwell London, it was not in the same league as the superb Edward Dent clock which took a premium-inclusive £93,750 at Bonhams, London, on December 13 (ATG No 2324) or the Charles Frodsham giant carriage clock which took a premium-inclusive £23,300 at Chilcotts in Honiton on December 2 (ATG No 2323).
Nevertheless, John Moore & Son (fl.1828-68) was a respected maker best known for tower clocks. This carriage clock, 8½in (21.5cm) high excluding the handle, was a quality piece with twin fusee movement striking hours and quarters on two coiled gongs.
Estimated at a very conservative £400- 800 on January 4, it sold at £6800.
