Second World War posters by the renowned British cartoonist and illustrator Cyril Kenneth Bird (1887-1965) feature in a sale of posters at Antikbar in London on January 27.

Known by his pen name ‘Fougasse’, the artist famously designed humorous and effective propaganda posters while working unpaid for the Ministry of Information during the war.

Among the 22-lot group at Antikbar is this original vintage road safety poster pictured above, issued in support of the Ministry of War Transport’s road safety campaign by the Tilling Group – the largest bus operator in the UK at the time.

The 14 x 9in (36 x 23cm) poster carries two images and is captioned with This is one way to hail a bus – This is another – Please queue up at a fixed stopping point.

Estimate £60-120.

A pair of watercolour and crayon works by Claude Flight (1881-1955), the British artist best known for pioneering the linocut technique, will go under the hammer at Roseberys’ sale in London on January 24.

The signed but undated duo depict warm bucolic scenes – quite different from the bold Futurist imagery of his Grosvenor School years. The pair bear labels for the Albemarle Gallery in Mayfair, and are estimated at £50-100 each.

Sunlit Garden, pictured above, and Outbuildings on a rainy day measure approximately 13 x 19in (34 x 50cm).
