Featured on the cover of an April 1919 issue of Vogue, it depicts Madame Condé Nast (Clarisse Condert), the then wife of the magazine’s publisher, Condé Montrose Nast, wearing a dress by a favourite designer, Fortuny.
Both the work’s title and the stormy sky in the background are said to reflect the atmosphere in France following the end of World War One, and Madame Condé Nast also wears a ’Bleuet de France’ pinned to her bodice.
It sold for $26,000 (£19,400) on December 14.
