An oil by Winifred Nicholson (1893-1981), painted during the most experimental phase of her career, features in Lyon & Turnbull’s sale in Edinburgh on January 17.
Awake, a 2ft x 20in (61 x 51cm) canvas from 1973, depicts the morning light coming through an open window, with a small vase of flowers in the right-hand corner. It had been in the artist’s family collection before featuring in an exhibition at the Crane Kalman Gallery in London.
From the late 1960s, Nicholson began to experiment with colour and light, paring it back and becoming increasingly abstract in style.
In a letter to her daughter, she wrote: “…all painting is to me painting of air and sky – that holds colours and light – not pictures of objects.”
Estimate £30,000-50,000.
