He famously bid £15,500 (£19,375 including premium) for a late 19th or early 20th century taxidermy bulldog which had been estimated at £800-1200 in the £3.9m sale of the collection of the highly respected dealer who founded London shop Jamb.
The dog came back on the market on December 6 at one of the regular taxidermy sales held at Tennants (18.5% buyer’s premium) at Leyburn in North Yorkshire, where its pedigree justified an estimate of £3000-5000. This proved about right when it sold at £5800.
Topping the day was the skin of a Bengal tiger along with photographs of the officer of the Queen’s Own Oxford Hussars who shot it at Jubbalpore in 1929. He had it preserved by the great taxidermy firm Ingen & Van Ingen of Mysore.
Coming on the market for the first time since then, it was estimated at £5000-7000 and sold at £11,000.
