The Potter collection (pictured above) of five letters with typed responses were sent to James Alec Hanley, a professor of agriculture, who advised Potter on the management of her farmland in the Lake District.
The correspondence from 1942-45 has been consigned by direct descent from the Henley family to Dawson’s Auctioneers of Maidenhead in Berkshire and is estimated at £10,000-15,000 on February 24.
The Ghandi collection contains three letters and five postcards written in Hindi and English by the Indian leader to a young freedom fighter called Sailendra. They date from 1940-47.
The letters mention Sailendra’s sister Abha, who married Gandhi’s grand-nephew and personal photographer Kanu Gandhi (1917-86). She was close to the Indian leader and was with Gandhi when he was assassinated in 1948.
The group is estimated at £13,000-15,000 on February 26-27 at Shropshire saleroom Mullock’s, consigned by Sailendra’s family.
