In 1883, before finding fame in the dancing halls of Paris, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901) painted a series of three en plein air oil on panels at his mother’s estate of Malrome, near Bordeaux.
This 7 x 4in (18 x 10cm) oil on panel above forms part of the trio and is priced at £35,000 from London dealership Horton.
Toulouse-Lautrec’s mother acquired the estate the same year and it is thought these were painted on a brief trip he made in the summer. The artist would later spend the final few weeks of his life at Malrome, brought there by his mother after he was struck with paralysis in August 1901.
From the total of Toulouse-Lautrec’s 725 known oil paintings, around 120 are on panel. Most are relatively small, and with a few exceptions, date from his earliest period until c.1886.
