This painting above, depicting the venerable French glass designer René Lalique (1860- 1945) seated at his desk in 1931, is the only recorded portrait painted in his lifetime.

The 2ft 2in x 2ft 8in (66 x 81cm) oil on canvas was painted by his daughter Suzanne Lalique (1892-1989), an accomplished designer and painter in her own right.

The portrait was commissioned by Jesse Boot, of Boots chemist fame and was subsequently owned by well-known Lalique collectors Glen and Mary-Lou Utt and sold at Sotheby’s in 1993 and Christie’s in 2017. It will be guided at £20,000-30,000 in a single-owner sale of Lalique glass assembled by dealer and collector Geoffrey G Weiner (see News Digest, ATG No 2354). The 70-lot sale will be held at Gorringe’s of Lewes in East Sussex on September 6.

Dix Noonan Webb’s next jewellery sale in London on September 4 will include a private collection of post-medieval gold jewellery discovered in Jamaica.

The 12-lot collection of 16th-18th century rings and other jewels was found in the dried-up riverbeds around Old Spanish Town by the vendor’s relative, who was a keen detectorist in the mid-20th century. This 16th century single stone Colombian emerald ring above is guided at £4000-6000.

The jewels are thought to have been lost to the river between 1716-26, a turbulent period in Jamaican history known as the ‘Golden Age of Piracy’.

It has provenance to an American collection and is estimated at £5000-8000.
