The archive offered some 650 cartoons, mostly executed in ink on paper with blue or grey wash but, where appropriate, with instructions as to colouring – as is the case with the example illustrated here.
The caption reads: “But why not submit to to a medical examination, and silence all the talk that’s going around the office Mr Greenland.”
The Saturday Evening Post, the New Yorker, Lilliput, Punch and John Bull were among the many journals that featured Starke’s work.
Meant for Men Only
The example reproduced here was destined for Men Only – as it was in Pearsons’ original, pocket-size format, not as very successfully relaunched in 1971 as a top-shelf, soft-porn title by Paul Raymond.
The lot also included some 400 pull-out or cut-out examples of Starke’s printed cartoons, proofs and other related ephemera.
