A painting by Paul Henry (1876-1958), one of Ireland’s foremost post-Impressionist painters, will go under the hammer at Surrey saleroom Ewbank’s on April 26.

The signed 20in x 2ft (51 x 61cm) oil on canvas depicts a view on Achill Sound in the west of Ireland, with a small sailing boat and a large expanse of cloudy sky.

Henry painted several seascapes of this nature, often on Achill Sound, which was the nearest point to Achill Island. It dates to c.1943-45, long after Henry left the island for Dublin in 1919. Consigned from a private collection in the UK, it has been approved for the next edition of Henry’s catalogue raisonné and is estimated at £20,000-40,000.
