A cache of early LS Lowry (1887-1976) drawings discovered in a deceased estate in Cheshire is estimated to sell for £150,000 at Bentleys Fine Art Auctioneers in Cranbrook, Kent.

Offered on April 7, the 19 original drawings have been authenticated by three Lowry specialists and date largely from 1911-19. They range from £2000-20,000 and depict academic subjects, such as refined classical nudes and studies of bust heads – a striking contrast to his later ‘matchstick men’.

Pictured aboveis a 19 x 15in (49 x 39cm) pencil on paper study of an ancient female bust, which carries a £8000-12,000 guide.

A small collection of Continental Old Master paintings will go under the hammer at Charterhouse in Sherborne on April 19-20.

The auction house said the group has come from a Spanish client and were previously in the collection of Jose-Maria Sanchez de Muniain y Gil, a professor of aesthetics at the Complutense Madrid University.

Pictured here is a 3ft 5in x 5ft 11in (1.05 x 1.82m) oil of The Adoration of the Magi in the manner of Italian painter Vincenzo Carducci (c.1576- 1638), estimated at £4000-6000.

A marine sale at Bonhams London on April 18 in Knightsbridge will incorporate 11 pictures by the prolific painter William Wyllie (1851-1931), consigned directly from collection of Lord Ivar Mountbatten.

The works were originally purchased by his great-grandfather, Admiral of the Fleet Louis Alexander Mountbatten (1854-1921), 1st Marquess of Milford Haven. After an illustrious career in the Royal Navy spanning over 40 years, he served as first sea lord from 1912 until the outbreak of the First World War.

The auction house said it is likely the pictures were purchased directly from the artist, if not commissioned by Lord Mountbatten himself.

A highlight is a 16 x 14in (41 x 34cm) oil on card laid on canvas recreating HMS Victory’s first journey into combat, against the French in 1778, which is estimated at £4000-6000.
